How to fix a UPVC window handle lock

ServicesNo CommentsMarch 2, 2018Handy Man

How easy can’t it be to replace the window handle lock?

Sometimes, these types of handle locks fail due to the soft metal used by the manufacturers. The material used for manufacturing this type of handle is alloy. Unfortunately, you can not glue or weld alloy parts and the ultimate solution is to replace the part with a new one. But, do not panic, 112 handymen will teach you how to do it yourself.
Tools required:
–Philips screwdriver
–Angle grinder or handsaw for metal cuts
–Measure Tape

Removing old lock

First thing first: Close the window and put the handle in the open position, remove the screw that will be covered by the handle when the handle is in close position. Now, put the handle in closed position and remove the other screw and remove the old handle, careful as sometimes the screws are hidden behind plastic caps. Use a Stanley knife to remove the caps.

When buying a replacement, use the chart below for measurements to make sure it will fit.

Now that you have removed the mechanism, measure the distance between the old screw holes to order the right window lock. See picture above

The new window handle will always come with a longer spindle. Take the old window lock and measure its spindle. Cut the new window lock spindle at the same length.

Cutting the mechanism  spindle

You can cut the spindle with an angle grinder or you can use a hand saw. Don’t forget to use goggles and gloves for your safety.

Now that you have cut the spindle to the size you are ready to install the new mechanism. This is a pretty straightforward task.

112 handyman Tips:

Keep the window in a closed position for easy mechanism installation.

You can use the old screws if the new ones are longer and you don’t want to cut them to size. The new handle comes with plastic caps and they will cover the screws.
