Fly Screen Doors
For people out there with pteronarcophobia (fear of flies) or for those who just want to breath the outside air without having to worry about cats, squerls or other pets going inside your home, there is a solution. Installing a fly screen does the job perfectly.
The fly screens comes in different prices and different sizes. Can be hinged or rolling installed.
In this article I will be going trough the installation process of a spring back hinged fly screen.
The fly screen was purchased by the customer from https://newblinds.co.uk/ we have no affiliation with them
Fly screen door installation
For the installation you will need :
- Metal saw ( I have used a circular saw to speed up the cutting ). You can use any saw that can cut trough metal.
- Pencil
- A hammer
- A drill
- A screw driver
- Stanley knife
Unpack all the bits and get familiar with everything and the installation manual will be the first step.
Measurments
After making sure you know how to assemble the fly screen start taking the measurements and make a note on a piece of paper, allow around 0.5 cm top and 0.5 cm bottom tolerance. When taking measurements horizontally don’t forget about the hinge and with this in mind add the hinges in the equation.
Cutting the fly screen door frame
Further, start marking and cutting the frame, I have used a circular saw rather than using an angle grinder as it speeds up the job and the cuts are straight, don’t forget to use protective gear.
Fly Screen Door Assembly
After all is cut to size, you have to join the frame together using the corner inserts provided in the pack. Now that you have assembled the frame, its time to install the mesh on to the frame
Fly screen door Mesh Installation
Lay down the mesh over the assembled frame and using the rubber sticks secure the mesh at the top or at the bottom of the frame by tapping the rubber stick with a hammer then pull the mesh as much as you can towards the other end and secure the mesh in the middle of the frame, repeat the process to secure the mesh at the other top and the sides. Now cut the extra mesh using a Stanley knife.
Fly screen door hinges installation
Now measure around 10 cm from the bottom and 10 cm from the top of the frame where you will have to install the hinges, mark the wholes and pre drill using a small drill bit, screw the hinges. Put the fly screen door up on position using a spacer under to give you a small gap under and a small gap at the top and mark the hinges on the side. Screw the fly screen door hinges into the wall and there you have it.
This type of fly screen door comes with spring hinges and it will close it self
